Wax Encaustic Artist Statement

My work tied into the theme of skin by the use of space. The galaxies in my collage represent skin by showing how the atmosphere protects earth, the same way our skin protects us.

My colours were mainly blue and purple, with some specks of bright light (the stars and nebulas), and some black. I chose these colours because they are a majority of the colours that you see in photos of space, as it is not a bright place besides the stars.

The text that I included in my encaustic was all related to space and the universe. Two of them were facts about space, and the ‘title’ text was “Creatures of the Universe”. I chose these because I have always been fascinated by space, and we really are just creatures that the universe has created.

My images were coated in wax and they laid out in the formation that I liked. I then added a two layers of tissue paper to creates a purple belt across the board, and then I layered the text on top of that for the final layer.

The most difficult part of this project for me was the ironing of the board at the end. It was very difficult to get the wax completely smooth, which I did not accomplish in the end although it came close. The most enjoyable part of this project for me was going through magazines and finding images that I really love and making them a part of my project.
